We all want to avoid plagiarism.  Did you know that there is a way to check your papers for missing citations and plagiarism?  SafeAssign is a great tool that you can use for free through Blackboard to check drafts of your papers for your own peace of mind before handing in the final draft for grading.

SafeAssign allows students and instructors to see what parts of papers are original to the student and where any unoriginal material might have originated.  Many times you will be required to submit a paper through SafeAssign on Blackboard.  There are different methods for personal use and instructor use.  Below you will find instructions for checking drafts as well as turning in a paper through SafeAssign for grading in Blackboard.

Submitting a SafeAssign assignment for a Course

  1. Log into learn.uark.edu with your UARK username and password.
    Enter your email and password and select Login.
  2. Click the Courses tab at the top of the screen then click the course in which your assignment will be submitted.

  3. In the course menu on the left, click the link where the assignment is located.

    Note: Your course may look different than what is shown.
  4. Find the assignment and click the title of the assignment.

  5. Scroll down and click the Browse button to attach your document.
    Scroll down and select browse.
    Note: This is similar to attaching a file to an email. Also note that there are certain file types that Blackboard will not accept. Make sure to check the syllabus to for instructions from your instructor on which file types are preferred.
  6. Select the assignment file to attach and click the Open button.
    Select your file and select Open.
  7. Optionally you can choose to submit your paper to the database. This could help maintain the originality of your work, and then click the Submit button.

  8. Verify that your file uploaded by checking for the confirmation message at the top of the page.

Submitting a Paper for Personal Use

To self-check your papers for proper citation before handing them in, you must first self-enroll in SafeAssign.

To Self-enroll in the SafeAssign Course

  1. Log into Blackboard at learn.uark.edu with your UARK username and password.
    Enter your email and password and select Login.
  2. Click the Courses tab at the top of the page.
    Select Courses.
  3. In the Course Catalog list on the right, scroll down and select SafeAssign.

  4. Mouse over the Course name “student.safeassign” and click the down arrow.

  5. Select Enroll.
    Select Enroll
  6. Click the Submit button.
    Select Submit
  7. Click the OK button.
    Select OK.
  8. You will automatically be taken to the SafeAssign Course Home Page.

  9. If you need to come back to the SafeAssign page, you can find it in your Course List under “Non-Credit Courses.”

Submitting Your Draft

Once you self-enroll in SafeAssign, you can submit a draft and check your paper for proper citation before turning it in to be graded.

  1. Ensure you are enrolled in the SafeAssign course (see above).
  2. Log into Blackboard at learn.uark.edu with your UARK username and password.
    Enter your email and password and select Login.
  3. In your course list, Select the SafeAssign course. This will be located in the “Non-Credit Courses” link.

  4. Click Submission Area.

  5. Scroll down and Click the SafeAssign “SUBMIT HERE” link.

  6. Click the Browse My Computer button.
    Select Browse My Computer.
    This is similar to attaching a file to an email. Also note that there are certain file types that Blackboard will not accept. Make sure to check the syllabus to for instructions from your instructor on which file types are preferred.
  7. Select the file to attach and then click the Open button.
    Select your file and select Open.
  8. Submit button.
    Select Submit.
  9. Verify that your file uploaded by checking for the confirmation message at the top of the page.

Checking your Submission

  1. Click Submission Area.

  2. Click SafeAssign “SUBMIT HERE.”

  3. To access your originality report, click the drop-down menu under “Assignment Details”.

    Note: Your Originality Report gives you information on what percentage of your paper matches other sources. SafeAssign reports are generated in a few minutes, showing the matching percentage results and source list.
  4. View Originality Report button.
    Select View Originality Report.
  5. Your originality Report will look something like this.

    Note: You have the percentage of your paper that matches another source (in this case 4%) and a list of where that occurs in your paper as well as where the information can be found (see the list of links in the bottom right). You can access these places in your paper by selecting the colored highlighter icon. This will highlight the matching passages in your paper, which appear on the left side of the screen.
