While Kaltura Capture is our go-to recommendation for recording video assignments, sometimes things happen and another option is needed. Whether there are hardware limitations, troubleshooting difficulties, or a need to collaborate with multiple people, having a back-up recording option is a must when on a time-crunch!

This article will cover how you can use Microsoft Teams to set up a meeting and utilize the Recording feature to save a video of your screen and yourself.

First: Set Up a Teams Meeting With Yourself

  1. Open the Microsoft Teams application.
  2. In the left-hand vertical navigation menu, click Calendar.
Calendar icon highlighted in the left-hand vertical menu with the Activity icon above it and the Calls icon below it.
  3. In the top right corner, click New meeting. You can leave the settings as they are OR change the date and time if you want to utilize this as a means to plan when to record your assignments.
  4. When finished, click Save in the top right corner.

This will save the meeting to your calendar.

Begin Recording with the Created Teams Meeting

  1. Open your PowerPoint presentation file or any other application you wish to record and have it ready to present.
  2. In Microsoft Teams, click the Calendar and locate the meeting that was created.
  3. Click on the meeting entry to pull up the options menu, and then click the Join button.
  4. A new Teams window will open to allow you to adjust your camera and microphone settings. Make sure the webcam is turned on and working if a webcam is needed. These settings can also be adjusted again before recording, if needed.
  5. Click the Join now button when ready.
  6. In the top right corner of the window, click the Share icon. This will open up screen selection options.
  7. Click “Window” to open up application options and look for your Powerpoint or other opened application in the list.
  8. Click the application to select it.

Once selected, the PowerPoint application should come to the foreground and show a red square around it. It will have likely minimized the meeting window as well, so make sure to re-open the Teams window to continue.
  9. Click the triple dots More icon and select “Record and transcribe” from the list. This will open a second menu next to the list.
  10. When ready to record, click “Start recording” to begin!
  11. Click on the opened PowerPoint or chosen program to bring it to the foreground and begin your presentation!

Save and Download the Recording

  1. To end the recording, click the triple dots More icon and select “Record and transcribe” once more from the list. This will open the second menu next to the list.
  2. Click “Stop recording” from the options.
  3. Click the Leave button in the top-right corner to exit the meeting.
  4. Click the Calendar again to go back to the calendar.
  5. Click on the meeting once more and then click the “Chat with Participants” link.

This will open up the associated chat room for the meeting and will be where you can access the recording. You should also be able to see the name of the meeting in your Chat lists in Teams and can access it there as well.
You can “Pin” the chat room in this list to reuse it for future recordings as well!
  6. With the meeting’s chatroom opened, click on the icon thumbnail for the recording.

This should bring up a webpage for where videos are stored via the Teams cloud server.
  7. At the top of the page, click the triple dots icon and select Download.
Make a note where the file is being saved – by default it should be the Downloads folder of your computer.

You’ve now successfully recorded and saved a video file with Microsoft Teams! The next important step will be to upload the file to your Kaltura My Media library in Blackboard. After it’s uploaded there, it’ll be ready to submit!
